The Hôtel Jean de Rat, a XVII century noble house, is a real jewel hidden in the heart of the most prestigious road of Montagnac.

Parts of the house dates back from when Montagnac was a famous medieval fair town.

At that time such large houses were used as merchant’s «Lojas» serving as shops or storage spaces as well as accommodation for foreign merchants.

Jean de Rat, the King’s Counseller, a Protestant, renovated the house in 1643, and gave its renaissance appearance.

At the end of the XVII century religous civil war forced Jean de Rat into exile.

His house was then turned temporarily into a Catholic school.
